
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and singer who performed for over 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her smooth, pleasant vocals and languid contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955-1969. Her rendition of "Cry me a river" the track she introduced on her debut album, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Alongside her music-related recognition, London was nominated for an award called a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her performance as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her career as an actress. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began in 1944 when she was cast in movies. They included roles as the lead female role in numerous westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969, she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be part of the Emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) where she appeared alongside her husband Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her former husband Jack Webb.
